Modern Family

Modern family might be one way to describe this bustling, active household . . . the dark and heavy interiors – not so much. Moreover, meeting the needs of kids, pets, and careers was made especially unpleasant in this cramped and outmoded kitchen. Although the overall square footage wasn’t an issue, the allocation of space was. The kitchen with narrow aisles and improperly sized island containing the range made for a problematic cooking station and difficult traffic patterns. Access to the patio and family hangout were hampered as well by a wall closing off the adjacent family room. The basics such as adequate task lighting and pantry storage insufficient.

The dream became better light and more reflective surfaces, safer and more logical appliance configuration, an island big enough for family and entertaining, an open and more contiguous family room, along with increased and better defined storage. Beautiful new oak floors, espresso cabinets, silvery tops, gleaming tile, and layered lighting bring a whole new energy to the household. By appropriating space from the formal living room, aisles were widened and appliances arranged to ensure smooth meal preparation. The island then becomes a focal point and practical addition; the family room peninsula a study in multiple uses. Seating for six and countertop serving abound.

Better flow, better lighting, better storage, better appliances . . . a dream come true.
