Modern Renovation

The structure of a small 1960’s modern house was transformed for improved functionality, comfort and appearance. Simple landscape gestures of retaining walls and a curved driveway resolved the site’s challenging topography and restrictive zoning to create a gracious, private entry for the house and the new two car garage within the wooded setting. The mass of the house was shaped into three volumes to articulate their different functions through contrasts of siding and color, reducing the scale of the six bedroom house. Windows were added, enlarged, and reorganized to connect the interior to a new terrace and views through the woods to the Vermont hills. Natural materials and careful detailing in a spare but textured modern aesthetic give the interior spaces a distinctive, calm character.
