Solid maple flare set pending completion in our shop.

Going from a standard stair / landing arrangement to an internal ("captive") flare allowed for a flush hallway upstairs as opposed to a drop / rise from the old house into the new house. No one really wants to have to step down and up to get down a hallway...

When you aren't sure what the newel should look like, or even if a newel is appropriate, consider alternatives...

Finished. Note how the partial railing allows the stair width to appear constant even though technically the tread is narrower up top. The hand railing is powdercoated steel by "others".

Here is big brother from 1st floor to 2nd floor. This set has a rise of almost 15' and weighed over 700lbs when completed.

Since much of the entry foyer was already taken up by the stairs in this case, why not make them wider right? Much work was done and tweaks accomplished to minimize the impact on the window frame for visual reasons.

Now we see what the railing probably looked like new, correct run, correct placement, correct in a simple stain not painted finish.
