West End Ocean View Apartment
Transforming this overly retro, beach front apartment was an act of true collaboration. The home owner, a bachelor with an eye for detail and no time for clutter worked alongside the Studio team choosing finishes that would help keep his Scandinavian renovation warm and inviting. Inspired by Whistler and modern West Coast design, the home was stripped of all its previously loved (now despised) finishes, wiping the slate clean for a more modern, functional space. Opening the spaces with clean simple lines and unadorned materials kept the home simplistic while still interesting and functional. Rather than using heavy brush strokes, the home's decorative features were chosen for their simplicity and textural interest. White-washed oak, rough-cut marble and raw concrete help keep the space masculine and modern. It is important that in a newly renovated and decorated home, a personality is maintained throughout the individual pieces, each telling a story for the homeowner. A lover of sport and travel, the client asked we help find pieces that feel collected rather than purchased. African horns, Canadian photography and dynamic lighting by Kelly Wearstler each keep the home from feeling overly modern and plain. A guiding principle when collaborating with our clients will always be: two heads are always better than one.
