Expanding the master bedroom suite with a 600 square foot extension to the house into a master bathroom, full walk-in closet and changing area is the program for this renovation, yet the spatial configuration based upon code requirements avails a horizontal axial architectural design approach across the back of the site while the interior arrangement becomes the opposing configuration articulated with the custom cabinetry The cabinetry is completely built-in, faced with doors of full faced cedar and stainless steel attached sand-blasted glass. The color palette was monochromatic allowing the form of the cabinets to be the foreground of the space.
Design of the cabinetry for the closet is driven by the need to maximize closet space. Designing a perpendicular arrangement against the longitudinal direction of the space satisfies this requirement, while providing an integrated landscape that provided privacy and programmatic difference. The cabinet heights are staggered according to sight lines across the room and views outward, generating a landscape that fills the space, without blocking natural light sources.
