Renovating an historical landmark residential structure, consisting of a central hall Georgian residence previously located on St. Charles Avenue exemplifies a trend that exists throughout the New Orleans area. Conceptually this project exposes the delicate balance of modern day living while preserving the historic architecture, consisting of the modernization of the kitchen area and an addition of a family room in the back portion of the residence. Considerations include establishing a connection between the more historical portion of the residence and the family area while modernizing the spaces for today’s lifestyle. The clients concerns of spatial flow and cohesion are exemplified in the materials and layout with the use of mahogany for the cabinets and the bar with a “wood bridge” allowing the client to display art pieces while linking to the family area without causing visual disruption.
