Through the modes of spatial manipulation of sectioning and carving this structure achieves a not only a clever response to living in post Katrina New Orleans and the fear of flooding in below sea level areas but an thoughtful environmental renovation by eliminating wasted space while creating dynamic modern living space in a 1960’s built residence. It was a 9,000 square foot house located on Bayou St. John that is reduced to 6,000 square feet by rezoning the space, while raising the most utilized spaces in the house. This allows for better climate control, providing more prominent view to Bayou St. John and removing space not utilized by the client increasing energy efficiency. Spatial sectioning is selected by their relative importance and include the main living, kitchen, and master bedroom. While spatial carving creates an area of privacy for the master bedroom creating an intimate exterior space for the client. The renovation of the second floor and its exterior balcony transformation was derived for a need to eliminate the second floor due to the raising of the most used spaces. This provided the ability to create more natural light within the public spaces and exterior spaces for the remaining bedrooms on the second floor.
