Donner Lake Contemporary, Truckee, CA
The owners of this property asked us to design a home that took full advantage of the exposure to Donner Lake. This young family has a passion for water sports and knew that their new home must have an amazing indoor/outdoor connection. Therefore we created multiple floor levels that have a direct connection to the lake and each linear foot of lakefront is maximized for the greatest impact.
In additional to creating connectivity to the lake, the feel of the house was to be natural, clean and contemporary in style with generous amounts of glass and a blend of raw, rustic, and sleek materials. Material selections included exterior and interior rustic pickle wood and reclaimed wood floors juxtaposed with heavy metals, cast concrete, colorful glass, and sleek stone tile and slabs.
The basic diagram of this home is different than any other home on Donner Lake. Instead of the typical arrangement where an exterior deck is sandwiched between the great room glass wall and the rear setback, this great room glass wall is located as close as possible to the rear setback and the exterior deck is to the side of the great room. Because of this layout the interior of the great room feels like it is floating over the lake and the exterior deck is protected from the afternoon winds by the massing of the great room.
At the lower level of this home two bedrooms and a large game room open directly to a rear paver patio that incorporates a fire pit area and a hot tub. There is also a mud room so that one can come in from the lake, take off gear and jump in the shower.
Each floor hosts a large individual entertaining area making the home comfortable for large groups as well as cozy for a small gathering by one of the four fireplaces. There is an easy flow to the home as well; great room to the deck, bunk room to the teen hangout and library, game room to the paver patio, and patio to the pier.
The architecture expertly takes advantage of the location and the interiors seamlessly draw inspiration from the sweeping views of water, trees, and snowcapped mountains.
