Highlands Renovation

This home is located a few miles north of Seattle overlooking Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains in the established park-like neighborhood called simply, The Highlands, and was designed in 1907 by the famed Olmsted Brothers. This community of homes is integrated with their natural woodland surroundings and the generous sites are large enough to provide complete privacy from neighboring parcels.

Their goal was to turn the home into a truly contemporary design that was open and light filled and responded to their informal way of living. In this two phase process, every room in the house was substantially reconfigured with an entirely new design starting with the room we call the hall and moving progressively through the living room, music room, dining room, kitchen, family room, master bedroom, master bathroom, children's bedrooms, powder room, and covered terrace. The result is a cohesive blend of white painted and bleached quarter sawn white oak paneling. The kitchen is comprised of ceruced white oak cabinets and polished concrete countertops.

The exterior was left largely as it was, although we added a large carved limestone entry portico to create a new "face" and identity for the home. This one addition was critical to affirming a sense of permanence and timelessness to the design
