Useless Bay Residence

This summer "cottage" located on a ten-acre site at the southern end of Whidbey Island, is designed around a dramatic two-story great room, flanked by two gabled elements.

To diminish the perceived size of the home, it was broken into a series of simply adorned forms. Double hung windows that bring to mind other summer places such as Nantucket, are eight feet tall. While providing an abundance of daylight, they also reduce the apparent size of the structure.

The great room has dining and general seating areas with massive fireplaces at each end and doors that open onto a covered terrace with a long sandy beach and expansive views of the Puget Sound and Mount Rainier beyond.
