Kosher in Baltimore

The homeowners wanted to annex a sunroom porch to their existing small kitchen and den. They asked me to work with the larger footprint to design:
• A spacious and function-focused kosher kitchen to accommodate their growing family,
• Seating for 8 in the kitchen
• A den/playroom,
• A guest bedroom, and
• A full bath.
Additional considerations included good sightlines from the kitchen for Mom to keep her kids within view, maximal storage, a door to the backyard, and a baking/prep area. Budget was moderate.

This long view gives a good idea of the general kitchen layout. The den, bath, and guest room are off camera to the right. Note the baby lock on the cabinet above the fridge — they don't really expect their toddler to climb there, it's Pesach (Passover) storage.

The center of this kitchen is the prep/baking island. A person working here has a clear view of the large informal table, the backyard, and the playroom/den.

Space was at a premium and the homeowner does a lot of baking. This Fisher-Paykel oven fits into a 24" wide base cabinet — it can hold up to 7 medium loaves of challah!

In the design industry, the trash can is sometimes referred to as "the fourth appliance" — recognizing the importance of placing it in an easily accessible spot.

On the other side of the wall is a stairway to the basement. There was some dead space above the stairs that became this microwave niche. Using an off-the-shelf microwave rather than one with a built-in look saved $$$.

This is the milchik run in this kosher kitchen. At the far left is a pantry cabinet with some Pesach storage above — and a baby lock to warn passers-by to keep out!
