Stephanie's Red Birch Shaker Kitchen

Stephanie and Chaim badly needed more storage, more counter space, a second sink, and better organization. The small kitchen-dining area at first seemed impossible. The existing U-shaped kitchen was cramped and uncomfortable to work in.

We discussed various possibilities to make the kitchen more pleasant and user-friendly, but I only hit upon the solution after going home... the tight U didn't allow for much improvement, but breaking it into an L and a peninsula — well, that would make all the difference!

This is a very pretty kitchen. Understated, welcoming, not glitzy, a pleasant place to work, eat and visit. Despite the cozy dimensions, 3 people can cook at once. The beautifully finished cabinets from Wellsford Custom Cabinetry are stained red birch, which is a different wood than white birch....

Stephanie and Chaim badly needed more storage, more counter space, a second sink, and better organization. The small kitchen-dining area at first seemed impossible. The existing U-shaped kitchen was cramped and uncomfortable to work in.

The corner sink has some counter on both sides. Note the beadboard backsplash above a few inches of Taj Mahal quartzite. Quartzite above the range is a tough and easy yo clean surface.

This kitchen has a small attached dining room. The table seats 6. The cabinets left and right of the table are 15" deep. Even a 15" deep cabinet can have usable drawers.

Usually a peninsula is attached to a counter against a wall to make an L or a U. This one is all by itself, which is just what the homeowners needed to increase workspace and make room for a dairy sink. That little dishwasher is an 18" Miele.

Stephanie really wanted a spot for a broom, dustpan, and Swiffer. We wedged in a very shallow broom closet to the right of the refrigerator. In this double picture you can see the cabinet closed on the left and open on the right, The cabinet is only 6" deep, and maybe 5" deep inside.

Stephanie and Chaim have 2 microwave ovens — dairy and meat. We hid them both. This microwave is sharing space with pantry items. The inside depth of the cabinet is 14", enough for a small microwave.
