Marcie's Kosher Condo Kitchen

Marcie and her husband moved to Baltimore from out of state to live closer to children and grandchildren. They purchased a spacious, light-filled 100-year-old condominium in need of some serious updating and space planning. Marcie's new kitchen, breakfast area, laundry, pantry, and powder room originally were the kitchen, a small utility room, and maid's quarters with service entry.

Condominiums come with limitations. A common one is plumbing: both sinks needed to be on the window wall. The left window was originally part of a small utility room and is actually narrower than the one at right. But the overall look is so seamless that people don't notice.

The modern, slab door cabinets are from Wellsford Custom Cabinetry. These are thermally textured surface doors, which are more durable than painted or stained wood doors. Wellsford also offers thermally textured doors as 3-piece and 5 piece (Shaker) doors.

This is a long kitchen. At right we can see the side-opening double ovens and in the back, beyond the breakfast table, is a dedicated area housing microwave, sundry appliances, and junk drawer.

Two microwaves are conveniently placed in 15"-deep upper cabinets. The outlets for the microwaves are located behind doors in the upper cabinets. The usable shelf depth is 14". In this long view from the breakfast area, we can see the dining room, and beyond that, the living room. Note the freestanding trash can under the counter. where it is not only convenient but is also easy for guests to find.

Marcie enjoys baking but does not enjoy having a massive and heavy KitchenAid mixer on her counter. This mixer lift fits in a frameless 18"-wide base cabinet, ready to be pulled up and out when in use. It locks in place and is very sturdy.

A side opening oven door, especially on the upper oven, makes putting in and taking out food much easier than a traditional bottom hinged oven door.

There are many ways to store spices, and this cabinet is one of my favorites. The shelves are 8" deep, shallower than normal, to make room for the built-in door rack.
