Tall Oaks

Sited on a knoll in a forest of majestic oaks, this house projects serene strength in it symmetrical Georgian façade. The entrance motif is closely modeled on Willis Polk’s 1915 Filoli estate near San Francisco. Other parts of the house are influenced by the Virginia houses of William Lawrence Bottomley.

The plan of the house reflects the client’s wish for their daily life to encircle a garden courtyard. Formal entertaining rooms, family-living areas, bedrooms, home-offices, pool and recreation room surround the bi-axial lawn.

Fine, durable materials are used throughout the house. Flemish bond brick with quoins and jack arches comprise the body. Stone porticos, columns, balustrades, and other elements enliven the composition. The formal portion of the interior features a Doric ordered stair hall with translucent glazed skylight and a composite ordered drawing room with a custom Versailles parquet floor
