West Island Kitchen

This warm, cozy kitchen was completely reinvented to suit the lifestyle of a couple who both enjoy entertaining, but did not want to break down walls to open the entire space to the dining room. With kids in their early twenties still at home, there is often more than one cook in the kitchen at the same time, so they needed good prep space for numerous cooks.

In this view of the kitchen before the changes, you see how much unused space there was in this kitchen. We took down the wall to the dining room, but kept it at half-height, as there was a cold air return we could not reroute, and the homeowner did not want the space "too" open to the dining room.

The original 2-pane window was replaced with this terrific awning window, that opens from the bottom and tilts outward, keeping any rain out, and the view unobstructed!

In order to add a little more support under the countertop overhang, we decided to use a simple corbel instead of a table leg, so as not to impede the motion of getting on and off the barstools under the counter.

In order to keep enough space for two barstools at the peninsula, we kept the lower cabinets at 12" deep, to match the uppers above, and widened the backsplash space between the counter and upper cabinets to 24" (instead of 18"), giving lots of "shoulder room" to the person sitting at that first...

Adding 4 textured glass cabinets in the darkest corner of this kitchen kept the kitchen from feeling too "heavy."
