Chapman Residence
Respecting the Neighborhood... This was a typical post war house built in the neighborhood of Westover. At 50 years plus, modernization was long overdue. After an initial cost analysis, renovation was deemed the cheaper alternative verses knocking down and building new. Remodeling was also determined the more energy efficient construction path. New house energy standards were incorporated into the existing structure, however, salvaging most of the existing shell, and foundation, yielded enormous energy savings. The main living level is arranged in an "open plan" for informal flexibility. From the street, the exterior design remains similar to the original hipped roof profile. The overall house form is compact with manipulations of wings and bays off the side and rear. The strength of the exterior design is achieved through clarity of form and a complimentary palate of details, materials and color. Even at double the size of the original house, the remade version maintains respectful spacing between neighbors and preserves the street scale.
