This project fronts on Lubber Run, one of Arlington's great watershed parklands. The addition design infuses the park setting into both new and existing spaces. The ground floor addition is organized as an informal open-plan living area with generous window groupings that maximize woodland views. The existing living and dining rooms enjoy borrowed light and park views through large new openings created in the existing former rear exterior wall.

Peaking above, and barely visible from the street, a new low profile roof lantern brings light into the second floor addition. This feature was in response to the home owner's request to bring natural light into the upper stair hall. The lantern enlivens the entire second floor with its streaming and ever changing sun light, treetop views, and the playful pendant lights suspended within it.

Parkland settings may lend themselves to create dramatic interior photos, but, they can present great difficulty in capturing exterior shots. Such was the case with this project addition. After numerous failed attempts to photograph it, we decided the below 3-D model was a good devise to explain the design. The image is particularly effective in demonstrating how the addition relates to the existing house, and how different architectural devices effectively break down overall scale.
