Charming Kitchen & Powder Room in Berkeley
In this charming Berkeley home, built in 1935, the recently remodeled kitchen was not in keeping with the original architecture of the house. This traditional, rose covered Claremont classic is a 2 story, single family house, 2000 square feet, has 3 bedrooms and 2.5 baths. The existing kitchen, powder room and laundry areas, lacked continuity and traffic flow.
The new homeowners, with two young children, were looking for a kitchen which includes a breakfast area that seats 4-6 people. At the same time, they were looking for a design that provided a nice flow to the adjacent powder room and laundry room. The only half bathroom downstairs was in the utility area, where guests, as well as family had to travel through the service area to get to it.
To achieve this objective, the doorway to the back area from the kitchen had to be widened. This load bearing wall had to be reframed and a new beam installed. To create openness, the beam was recessed in the ceiling. Two existing terra cotta flues where removed to create more room for cabinetry and for the new powder room. Part of the wall on the kitchen side was designed to include a bench with storage below and a custom table that can easily seat 4-6 people. At the other end of the breakfast table, a tall cabinet with a built in microwave and trash/ recycling center was installed.
Across from the breakfast table, cabinets creating an “L” were installed to include a 36” wide all gas
Wolf range and a 42” wide Vent-A-Hood pro ventilation hood. A tile backsplash with a border creates a nice focal point. The existing bay window was painted and a shelf was installed above to create continuity between the upper cabinets. The existing Lehber refrigerator/freezer was installed in the corner creating a very nice built in look.
As you make a turn behind the microwave cabinet, a little foyer provides an invitation to more tall cabinets that wrap around and continue into the new powder room and new laundry room.
The powder room was turned, so to speak, to create a longer and more functional area. This new powder room now feels more spacious.
In order to isolate the laundry from the rest of the area, a new room was designed to include a door.
The laundry units were moved and installed on the exterior wall, creating a better clearance for the basement door to open.
The challenge was not only to bring the new kitchen to the architecture of the house, but also to complete the remodel in a timely manner as the family had recently been relocated from out of state.
The remodel was completed on time and on budget.
