Contemporary East Bay Condominium

This urban Emeryville condominium is home to a wonderful, working couple, who were looking for a stylish update to their kitchen and bathroom. While space was limited and there were no windows in these rooms, the goal was to achieve efficient, well-lit, and sophisticated designs in keeping with the high ceilings and modern feel of the home.

Optimal storage solutions were key to utilizing all the kitchen space. Solutions included corner units in base cabinetry, wall cabinets reaching the ceiling, appliance garages, and additional cabinetry above the sink. The paneled dishwasher and refrigerator/freezer create a streamlined look. A new location for the microwave, originally above the range, allowed for a new hood and more head room above the range. Dimmable recessed LED lights in the ceiling as well as new under cabinet lighting were crucial to the new, uniformly lit space. Under cabinet angled plug strips were implemented to showcase a clean backsplash of white, reptilian skin textured tile. While integrated pulls on the thermo laminate cabinet doors enhance the smooth surfaces of the contemporary design.

The bathroom design focused on luxury and functionality. The accessories in the shower represent that duality: foldable teak bench, teak shelf with grab bar, rain shower head and hand shower combination. On the shower walls, a decorative band of glossy, three-dimensional tile are surrounded by flat, matte field tile to create a subtle focal point. The floor tile in and outside the shower pan has an illusion of a rough surface texture to contrast with the smooth wall tile. The full mirror and banjo countertop ties together the sink and toilet area to the edge of the shower. Since plumbing ran inside the wall where the medicine cabinet was to be located, a custom wall-mounted mirror was designed to provide more viewing angles.

Custom Kitchens was able to work very well with the homeowners to design and execute the projects within the parameters of HOA regulations and overcome the challenges of remodeling small interior spaces in a multi-story, multi-family residential building.
