Craftsman Kitchen, Bath Addition and Fireplace Remodel in Berkeley, CA
This beautiful craftsman home had a very outdated kitchen from the 1960’s. It was combined with an adjacent original 1910 utility area with toilet room that had a door leading to a lovely existing back porch and garden. The current owners with 2 children wanted a larger kitchen with more natural light, energy efficient windows, storage and additional counter space for food preparation. They love to cook. The kitchen needed to include a space to dine, do homework, and entertain guests. The space also needed efficient laundry facilities and at least a powder room to add to their one bath home.
To create the space needed, a bearing wall between the kitchen and utility area had to be removed and the existing lowered ceiling in the utility area had to be incorporated into the kitchen design. Adding a larger glass door to the porch and replacing the existing water heater with a more efficient on demand water heater mounted on the exterior, created a larger and more efficient space with lots of natural light. The new space allowed the opportunity for a separate laundry room, a full bath and lots of pantry and utility storage. Closing up a window that had a poor view in the kitchen, and enlarging the window over the sink created an opportunity for an interesting new layout and a better view of the garden. Placement of the range in an angled corner improved the flow, counter space and work triangle. A bench against the wall with a table and open chairs allows for guest and the family to enjoy being in the kitchen with the cooks but out of their way.
The kitchen is now much more open for the family to enjoy the large rear open porch and garden while the traffic flow is out of the work triangle. The existing lowered ceiling allows a visually separation between the kitchen, the rear door, bath and laundry.
The addition of a new full bath with a shower was an unexpected design delight for the homeowners. They were thrilled with the extra value added to the home, going from a one bath home to a two bath home. The improvement of counter space around the range means that hot pots have a safe place to rest on the durable granite countertop. The added ceiling lighting, LED under cabinet task lighting and above wall cabinet soffit lighting improve visibility. The shower pan tile is small hexagon porcelain with a good grip to prevent slipping.
The materials selected in the project are easy to clean and durable. The countertops are leather finished granite, the cabinets smooth paint and the natural hardwood floors are easy to mop up. The sub-way back splash tile in the kitchen and the shower tile in the bathroom match color and are appropriate to the age and design of the home. The painted cabinets give life and light to what was once a dark dreary space. The details and the fit and finish of moldings, windows, door, bench details, refrigeration panels, the complexity of the angled range and fillers with hood reflect the fine craftsmanship that this home deserves. The neutral colors of the cabinets with the tile back splash and leather textured granite countertop create a balance between smooth and textured. The new kitchen, bath and laundry colors and material selections feel like they could have been there since the home was built.
The window styles, casings, and moldings mimic details throughout other areas of the house. The soft palate of colors used work with the beautiful brown shingles and earth tones of the house and garden.
The green wall color pulls together all the elements and showcases the owners’ poster with bits of red which is a complimentary color to the green creating balance. The large proportion of the poster that sits proudly on the wall behind the bench and table reflect the high ceiling and open space and the owners’ love of biking, health and family.
