Earlier this year, we received an email from a client we collaborated with five years ago on designing and installing a fireplace and custom built-ins in her Mid-Century modern home in Annandale, VA. She expressed her fondness for the cozy fireplace during winter months but now wished to complete the room and enhance its functionality.

We proposed a home office/family room layout for this extended space, as more individuals work from home and a comfortable workspace is essential. We removed the original wall paneling and carpet, replacing them with drywall and luxury vinyl plank. We also adorned the stairs with mid-century modern-inspired carpet, creating a one-of-a-kind focal point. Our client has a fondness for vibrant colors, so we incorporated shades of green, blue, and red to complement the neutral tones of the fireplace and built-ins.

The area has been transformed into a functional, cozy, and energetic space that exudes a sense of livability. We preserved the sentimental value of our client's heirloom pieces, such as the coffee table and side table, which were thoughtfully gifted by her stepmom before passing away.
