Donlea

The couple that owns this Leaside house found themselves in the enviable position of having more space than felt practical for two people at a stage in life when they don’t need more than one dedicated bedroom space. Rather than downsize to a condo, they opted to renovate and make the home truly work for them and how they live.

The traditional three-bedroom detached house was reconfigured to create an open ground floor, primary suite on the second floor, and large new enclosed patio off the kitchen.

With a few of the ground floor walls removed, the kitchen was expanded across the whole back of the house, and a new dining area was created in the centre of the layout. Modern detailing and clean lines unify the different spaces and create a calm, ordered atmosphere.

The kitchen makes use of all available space for storage, and features the same beautiful quartzite used throughout the ground floor.

A new larder and bar area was installed on the south side, which dramatically increases the amount of storage in the kitchen, and houses an appliance garage and dedicated drinks station.

Stepping into the screened-in porch feels like stepping into another room inside the house. The thoughtful use of finishes like wood and stone that can be exposed to the elements, but are more familiar in indoor spaces, blurs the boundary between inside and out.

A new gas fire pit was installed in the central seating area, creating a cozy place to lounge all year round. A permanent outdoor tv was installed for watching sports events and movies.

The enclosed patio transforms from an opaque volume into an illuminated box when lit from within at night.

Wood paneling that wraps on to ceiling is thoughtfully lit, and creates a warm ambient glow.

The primary bedroom was relocated and combined with another bedroom to create a suite with a large walk-in closet. A new deck was added off the bedroom, on top of the screened in patio below.

On the second floor, the existing bathroom and three bedrooms were transformed into a primary bedroom suite that features a lounge and generous walk-in closet. The small existing bathroom was updated to feel lighter and more open, and to make better use of the available space.
