Victor Renovation

This renovation transformed the third floor of a rowhouse in Toronto’s east end into a light and airy master bedroom and office. The layout balances the clients’ desire for an open-concept bedroom with the need for a more private office space and reading area. Careful consideration of skylights, custom millwork, and a restrained material palette, produces a calm, cohesive retreat in the trees.

As avid readers who work in publishing and law, the clients wanted a spacious, comfortable retreat that could also function as a home office and reading nook. The bedroom is open and airy with framed views of the sky and the trees beyond.

Wrapping the wood floor up the wall provides a warm, subtle backdrop to the clients’ book collection, and creates a unique and functional headboard wall.

Clean, simple millwork and furniture were used throughout to create a serene space to begin and end the day. The warmth of the wood and the books provide subtle visual interest.

The bank of custom closets is illuminated by natural light from the skylight above. Though appearing uniform, a portion of the closet is a walk-in which provides ample storage. The placement of the closets also provides privacy from the stairway and entrance behind.

The reading nook and a view to the trees can be glimpsed through the doorway leading from the bedroom to the office space.

A comfortable reading area is essential for the clients’ work, so was incorporated into the office space. Careful skylight placement frames a view of the trees, creating the feeling of being in a cozy, private treehouse.

The same materials and wood-wrapped wall detail used in the bedroom are carried through to the office, which has enough room for two separate work stations. Ample shelving provides a showcase for art and books.
