Islamic Center
Following the tragedies of the 9/11 attacks, the clients of the Mosque of Nasreen in San Luis Obispo were inspired to create a tranquil sanctuary for the community. This gesture hoped to express a sense of solidarity and harmony with the public while illustrating the true peaceful nature behind the religion of Islam.
Creating an inviting entry courtyard to the mosque was a key program element as well as a traditional mosque design feature that symbolized the site was open to all of the community. Spilling water bowls frame the front entry providing a calming stream sound while also highlighting its symbolism in Islamic culture as the gift of life and purification. The Islamic star and crescent stamped in the concrete direct its visitors to Mecca.
