This Shell Beach home was enhanced with a dramatic new entry focal point, created with steel and a sand blasted glass screen designed to provide privacy. The motor court was created with scored concrete that echoed the grid pattern of the privacy screen.

The front planters incorporated Carex “Milk Chocolate” as the major color block that plays off of the oxidized steel screen. Kniphofia “Burning Scepter” and Achillea “Fireland” accented the rust colors and provided a pop of color.

The motor court was choreographed to open to a courtyard through a pivot gate; moving the typically indoor entry area out into the garden. Upon stepping into the courtyard, a water wall installation begs attention and slows the visitor by providing them a close tactile experience.


The Ipe wood deck provided an inviting space protected from the predominate coastal winds of Shell Beach and is enhanced by the fire pit filled with recycled glass. The screen blocked undesirable off-site views while still permitting morning light to enter the garden. At night, the screen’s dramatic lighting alters the outdoor mood with changing colors from yellow tones to pinks, reds and blues.
