Map Collage Powder Room
2014 ASID NJ Silver Award for Design Excellence in a small bathroom.
With the kitchen renovation already underway, the client asked about the possibility of adding a half bath to the first floor. By using a wall mount toilet and a tiny wall mount sink we were able to meet code clearance requirements and install a powder room in the former kitchen utility closet (44" x 44" = 13.4 square feet!). Since every inch was critical, the contractor milled very thin window and door casing as well as chair-rail and baseboard.
As sometimes happens, demolition revealed an alarming condition as seen in the "before" photo: the corner of the house was rotted and sinking. The rotted wood was removed, the house was stabilized, the client was relieved and we were soon back on track again.
Materials were selected to be boy-proof, easy to clean and to flow with the colorful and whimsical design aesthetic we had already established in the rest of the home. (See the Vintage Cottage Kitchen Remodel project). Below the chair-rail the walls are paneled with stainless steel sheets – an industrial chic and very cleanable surface. The natural Carrara marble herringbone floor has dark grey grout and the whole floor is sealed.
The focal point of this tiny powder room is a custom map collage "wallpaper" (with a protective clear coat) above the chair-rail. There are quite a few witty mash-ups: Tennessee next to the Black Sea, the borough of Brooklyn pasted right onto England, Poland right next to Illinois. The vintage aged mirror was a happy find while cleaning out the basement junk from the previous owner. The one wall sconce (on a dimmer) over the sink provides enough light for the small space. The finishing touch was some jewelry for the door: a vintage purple glass doorknob.
