A few construction moves greatly improved the function of the kitchen. Removing the back window (which looked out onto a screened porch) and the radiator below it allowed for a long L-shaped cabinet run for the range and sink with lots of room for food prep and clean up. With new recycled denim insulation and a new energy efficient triple casement window and door, the minimal heating need is now handled by a cabinet toe kick electric heater. Moving a waste stack 2' to almost bury it into the wall provided room for an additional cabinet and eliminated a useless corner cabinet. This also resulted in an odd sized “found” space, which we put to use with a custom floating wine bottle rack above and open cubbies below. Reversing the swing of the back door onto the porch helps to avoid door smashing with the powder room. Widening the doorway to the dining room helped with flow and a sense of openness. The refrigerator, tall food pantry and side cabinet were all fitted around the chimney for a built-in look. White Shaker style cabinets, Carrara marble style quartz countertop and white farmhouse sink all create a neutral and fresh background for the strong wall color and custom backsplash. The crowning jewel of this vintage cottage style kitchen is the broken tile and dish mosaic backsplash. Pride of place above the range belongs to the client's grandmother's china. The original pine wood floor was kept for its aged patina. The red, pink, orange and turquoise color scheme flows throughout the home in different combinations in the kitchen, dining room and living room.
