This rural residential landscape occupies a remote bluff-top property with a home and office barn overlooking the river and sky. Difficult grading and the dramatic setting became important considerations in organizing the landscape.
A strong 6-by-6-foot geometric grid provides the framework for the design. Light-etched concrete, square stepping pads and multiple levels of water create a distinctive entry sequence and courtyard. The central water feature is inspired by the Roman impluvium, with water flowing across and around the geometry to create a cooling, walk-on-water effect.
The project demonstrates the integration of site planning, grading, water feature design, concrete detailing and outdoor living within a challenging rural landscape.
