Southampton Seaside "Cottage"

Located at the Southampton Sea, this hi-end "cottage" illustrates a more traditional, country look.

For the Library, it is created as a well-ordered space where quiet contemplation and serenity can lead to the wild and unruly stirrings of the imagination and the ocean beyond. This division between order and disorder is at the very soul of designing this space. The fervor of the restless sea and ever-changing sky coexhists with the neatly manicured lawns and stately homes. The library celebrates the meeting of poetry of place and poetry of mind.

Unlike some libraries which are sealed off from the world, this one basket in its close relationship to nature. The green and yellow palette mirrors nature's color scheme. The materials employed are associated more with the exterior, rather than interior use: the marble mosaic floor might have come from the exterior courtyard of an ancient Venetian palazzo; the rough texture stucco-like suggest a house's exterior walls.

Rare books, old botanical prints, and plaster moldings on the painted bookcases complement the antique finishes. The room is brought into this century with the use of more modern details. Soft, flowing window draperies offset the hard rough wall surfaces. Mildly toned woods are contrasted by the hard mosaics.

The bright and cheerful family room features green, white and yellow daffodil patterned fabrics designed by William Morris. White wicker and wainscoting give the room an outdoor feeling, making it the the perfect place for reading, writing, and entertaining.

In the Master Bedroom, country Swedish furniture preserves the tradition of furniture making and design. Fine lines offset by subtle curves add a air of lightness to each piece. Made with attention to detail and respectful of scale, proportion and humanistic appeal, the tables and bed are both elegant and calming. The furniture’s craftsmanship remains true to the original materials, making them come alive in the 21st century. Accompanying the country Swedish style furnishings are the beautiful Gustavian light fixtures. A airy pendant made of crystal and bronze. Elegantly perched on the ceiling, discrete yet decorative, the chandelier adds a sense of lightness and cheer. Touches of infused aqua add a boldness subdued by the softer tones of sand, as inspired by the seaside outside, and off white color on the walls. The bedspread and pillows add that defining touch, highlighted by the fine aqua lines painted upon her dresser. Adding to the mix is the artwork.

The nursery exemplifies the best that is about country living: the newness of things just arrived and the history of things past. That is, this space illustrates how modern inventions can fit comfortably within the idioms of the past. So, a contemporary crib, albeit traditionally styled, is surrounded by both antique toys and furniture. The carpet, table and chairs are modern and combine beautifully with the antique baby carriage and rocking horse.

The room's serenity mirrors nature's quite moments, while the reader's imagination suggests the steady rhythms of the ocean's ebb and flow
