A Room With a View
This waterfront cottage remodel had some awesome design opportunities and some challenges. The result is a successful collaboration between the kitchen designers, the discerning homeowners, a talented interior designer, and skilled craftsmen.
The panoramic water view is the focus of this home. With such an open plan, the available wall space is quickly consumed and there was an awkward niche in the back of the kitchen. We reviewed numerous layout options and considered the various design ideas that each offered. The resulting plan is an effective combination of the best features from different concept sketches.
Some of the key design elements are:
- The lighted display cabinet with arched glass doors that faces the living room.
- The semi-circular raised seating area featuring a “hand planed” alder top supported by a sage green curved bead board wall.
- Long serving counter with plenty of storage adjacent to the dining area.
- The dominant focal point is the wood hood above the dual fuel range with matching corbels and lovely tile backdrop.
- The range is flanked by narrow cabinets that look like apothecary drawers but slide open as a door revealing spice storage.
- The glass door cabinets on each side of the hood feature a light green bead board back that compliments other green accents in the kitchen and a ‘mug shelf’ below for extra storage that keeps items off the counter.
- At the outer ends of the cooking area are the microwave drawer, second under counter oven and plenty of wide drawers.
- Directly across from the range is the island with an apron sink, waste/recycling pull out, and dishwasher; there is an open bookcase on the end of the island for cookbooks.
- The niche in the back of the kitchen offered the perfect space to feature an integrated refrigerator-freezer armoire across from the extra deep pantry cabinets with pull out shelves.
- The end of the pantry cabinets provided some needed ‘wall space’ where we placed an alder ‘hutch’ with bi-fold doors to conceal small appliances.
- In a corner where the 42” high walls meet that separate the foyer and the stairway we placed a bar area that includes a wine cooler and refrigerator drawers.
The challenge of the sloped ceiling which was only 88” high on the back wall was solved by varying the height of the cabinets as their depth changed and using a multi-layered crown molding to bring it all together.
The kitchen provides the home owners with a great place to cook, eat, and entertain while enjoying the fabulous view.
