Crocus Hill Residence

Built in 1905, this home was a showcase of the English Arts & Crafts aesthetic—except for the 1980s-era kitchen, where the history had been stripped away.

The goal for the remodeling project was to create a modern kitchen that reflected the history of the residence. The design would not mimic the past but build upon it, creating a kitchen that fit the context of the rest of the house while appearing timeless. Our task was to completely remodel the kitchen, in the existing footprint, to return a rich, historic aesthetic, including warm wood tones, while updating all amenities and introducing modern technology.

Key features of the new kitchen include brackets and millwork that link the refrigerator to cabinetry on opposite side of the space, creating a threshold that visually distinguishes the breakfast space from the cooking area; and a cooking hearth design solution that accommodates an existing chimney protruding into the space.

This kitchen remodeling project provides a striking example of honoring and reclaiming the past while anticipating the future, allowing the house to evolve subtly to meet the needs of future generations.
