St. Croix River Cabin

Intending to spend more time at their beloved cabin, our clients wanted a more open and cohesive design for entertaining and relaxing while preserving the sensibilities of an early-20th century retreat. Working within strict scenic river guidelines, the project was contained to the original building’s footprint. As part of a whole-house remodel the entire roof was removed and reconstructed, creating a steeper pitched roof to accommodate the conversion of a second floor bunk room into a new master suite, guest suite, and laundry.

Originally a small suite located on the main floor, the new master suite is now a spacious retreat perched among the white pines with breathtaking views of the scenic river valley below, creating the effect of a tree house.

The history of the house inspired us—we were careful not to obliterate its origins. The building used to be owned by a stainless steel fabricator, so we kept and refurbished the stainless steel countertops, drawer boxes, and cabinetry throughout, particularly in the kitchen.
