Kingfield Bungalow

This bungalow, built in the 1920’s, had survived 90 years with its original kitchen. Small, lacking modern appliances, and cut off from the rest of the house, it no longer suited modern life. The homeowners desired a kitchen that would remain faithful to the aesthetic of the house while providing overdue amenities and a sense of connectedness to the dining and living rooms.

We created a solution that completely opened up the back end of the house. Previously accessed through a single narrow opening from the dining room, the kitchen is now integrated with the rest of first floor. The stairways have also been opened, converting this once compartmentalized house into a free-flowing sequence of spaces so desirable in today’s lifestyle.

A small, cantilevered addition on the south side of the kitchen was all that was required for greater storage and suitable work surfaces while new appliances have been thoughtfully integrated in to period-appropriate cabinetry.
