Sioux Falls Residence

Nearly every room in the house was considered and redefined in this project.

A circular fireplace organizes the four quadrants of living: conversation, cooking, dining, and television. Defined by changes in ceiling plane and thoughtful placement of select materials, each area is up to the same standards as near-by built-ins in living and dining areas. Linked through design and materials to the rest of the house, the new kitchen participates in the entire living space. Note the textured plate glass backsplash admitting light to the countertop from the stair behind as it partners with the adjacent mosaic glass wall. The lighting is carefully considered and flexible enough for intimate cocktail parties and hard-core clean-up.

Capped by the comfort and warmth of the walnut eating surface, the island is an integral part of the design. Sight lines were carefully planned to keep clutter screened from view and appliances stored out-of-sight. Modern necessities are accessible but not necessarily seen. The layout is simple and classic—a perfect mix.

The study separates the view of the owner’s bedroom from the common living area and serves as a transition space. Because the study is located adjacent to the sitting area she is able to easily interact with her son, yet she still has the seclusion needed to operate her small business while at home.

Through clever space planning we were able to dramatically change the way the house functions without necessitating major structural or exterior changes and bringing cohesion and solidarity to the relationship between the rooms.
