Grandma's House

This year I have purchased my Grandma's house from my Aunt Stella. It is a 1,200 sq.ft. Cape Cod style home in Massachusetts. My husband and I have taken down the drywall, had the walls rewired and plumbing redone, added a dormer upstairs, added a bathroom, new kitchen, redid the existing bathroom, new siding, new roof, new front porch, new porch stairs, new everything...... It has been a labor of love! Why didn't we tear down the house? My grandfather milled the trees in his sawmill and built the house himself in 1943. My Dad was his helper at 10 years of age. We have opened the outside wall from the porch to the dining room and the kitchen to make one great gathering room for all of my family. It really functions well. This is still a project in motion as we still need to do some furniture pieces and window treatments, art and accessories. Gina

Our tiny kitchen has tons of storage! We chose a Navy subway tile for a back splash to add contrast. The 2 Cabinets flanking the Hood have glass doors with "X" detailing for that true farmhouse look!

We added the "X" detailing to the glass cabinets to coordinate with the "X" on the ends of the island in the Kitchen. The corner shelving was custom built to add easy to reach storage without having to dig through cabinets.

My Grandmother's Sideboard was her favorite piece of furniture. It was a dark brown wood finish and I had it refinished in gloss white. the mirrored back splash was all the rage in those days.

Before shot..........We took my Grandfather's Corner hutch and installed it into the baseboard, added an open shelf above, and painted it in gloss white. It turned out really nice! See the next photo.

In the Living room The wool rug has a cobblestone pattern that ties all of the colors together in the space. Extra seating always comes in handy with the two ottoman.

My Dad made this coffee table and it was dark brown stained pine. I took a brush to it and lightened it up! We used a sectional for maximum seating in the Living room and added a couple of ottoman for younger guests. The wood slices are a nod to my Grandfather with his sawmill.

In Grandma's Bedroom we used a wardrobe from the 1940's and accented it with an iron bed. This tiny room was Grandma's bedroom. We relocated the two windows on each side of the bed for symmetry and added the two smallest night tables that we could find. The iron bed fit in well with the farmhouse...

The upstairs stairway area use to have a flat ceiling, even with the top of the window. The railing area used to be a solid half wall. it is so open and airy now. The light just pours through the windows!

This was my favorite find! The antique beds have hand carved Acorn finials on the 4 posts. I had to have headboards that were no more than 48" high because of the height of the knee wall. They came in an orange maple finish and we Sprayed them gloss white in no time at all!

In the Twin Bedroom, we used Antique Twin beds with Acorn Finials. The Patchwork pattern on the sham combines all of the colors in the room! This was Aunt Stella's bedroom when she was growing up.

In the Master Bedroom we added a shiplap wall on the knee wall, with built-in night tables with a drawer each and swing arm lights.

The Built-in window seat and extra floor to ceiling storage gives us a place to put our shoes and sweaters. It's all in the planning!
