The clients on this project, in anticipation of a parent moving in and having to vacate the existing master bedroom, commissioned us to construct a master bedroom suite onto to their existing brick rancher. While their need was apparent their wants would become clear during the design phase of the project. Item number one on the “want” list was ample room with space for future expansion. Other wants included ample closet space, a sitting area, a work space and a bathroom with a walk-in shower.

To prepare the existing structure for the addition the roof covering and framing on the den had to be removed to make way for the new roof line. The den had been remodeled several years earlier and special care had to be taken to prevent damage to the interior of the den. Floors, walls, and cabinets were covered with blankets and plastic and monitored daily.

The storage issue was handled with a large walk-in closet (centrally located in the bedroom), a storage closet under the stairs to the bonus room and a built-in storage cabinet in the bathroom. A section of the bedroom was allocated for a sitting area complete with a gas fireplace and a wall mounted television. A work space is located just inside the bedroom door and is in a location that provides it’s user with some privacy.

The new bathroom is luxurious and spacious. The custom built tiled shower is also a steam bath and features Moen fixtures and a tiled bench seat. The granite top on the vanity is locally fabricated and helps to enhance the beauty of the custom built cabinets.

A new deck was constructed off the addition to tie into the old deck which provides the client with sitting area outside their bedroom. The use of exterior materials that matched the existing house made the new addition fit seamlessly into the existing structure thus eliminating that added-on-to look. We listened to the clients wants and needs during the design phase and delivered it in the construction phase. The clients were pleased.
