Project Scope & Objectives
The master bathroom in this Mediterranean style Winter Park home was no stranger to renovations. It had been modified in its previous life to meet the changing needs of its owners over the years. A linen closet was partially removed to give way to a seating area for a makeup, stone counters were installed, and extension cords used as needed for more modern conveniences like a smart toilet, lit mirror, and towel warmer the client had purchased. The homeowners soon realized they needed a true overhaul to truly modify the space to fit not only their needs, but their style.
What these homeowners really wanted was something modern, sleek, sexy, and classy... something they would enjoy being in each morning and night. Lighting and floating cabinets were at the top of the wish list. “Light, white and bright”. Ample storage, a proper makeup area, and a more modern aesthetic. Originally the clients wanted to keep their existing tub and shower areas, and only rework the remainder of the bathroom.
Challenges & Solutions
As with any project, working around existing items makes design much more difficult. Things need to appear cohesive and timeless so that it does not appear one thing was remodeled and another untouched. Working with materials to give the light and white aesthetic the client wanted, and yet pulling in the travertine of the existing tub and shower areas to make them seem included and effortless, was anything but. The right tones of marble needed to be selected. To give a rich appearance, natural stones needed to be included in the design. Since maintenance was a concern, instead, some of the most modern and up to date materials were perfect for this job. In lieu of marble countertops, which can etch and stain easily, a porcelain slab was selected. The latest laser printing technology is used on this porcelain, and the slabs are 10’ long. This really gives the illusion of a crisp natural stone pattern, and a full slab layout that is naturally hygienic and only needs to be wiped with a sponge!
Once the layout and design materials were selected and presented to the clients, they were so excited that they decided to add in some scope! They decided they wanted to replace the existing drop-in tub and deck with a free standing version! We reworked the design to include the new tub and layout and specified a custom Matte Black tub from Barclay with a polished gold Faucet from Brizo that mounts to the floor in front of the window.
After presenting the new design and all materials to the client, they decided to then go ahead and remodel the shower as well! Designing any room piece by piece can be very difficult. Everything affects everything when you are designing a space you plan to build. CAD plans need to change, selections that worked previously sometimes need to be adjusted. But the excitement from the clients, and the trust they gave me on selecting design elements made every step of this project fun and well worth the extra work.
Even during construction, we needed to make adjustments based on field conditions. The client installed 2 skylights that we carefully planned to center over each sink area, with a chandelier in between. When the time came to install the skylights, it turns out they were drawn right where some roof trusses were! It was an easy shift, but the chandelier needed to be relocated. It turned out to be a happy accident, because its final home - centered on the window, over the black tub - looks like it was always meant to be!
The tile in this project was challenging as well. A centered chevron pattern to center with each shower head proved to be a mathematical challenge, and a starburst pattern on the main bathroom floor to center with the 2 sinks was another detail that required many hours of planning. Luckily with the right installation crew and team, the execution of all the details appears simple and effortless.
The Results
The result of the project was everything the client wanted, and more! Light and bright… modern and open... cool and warm… High contrast pieces in a striking matte black finish carried through the bathroom. The tub, wall sconces at the makeup area, chandelier over the tub, and custom frames for the backlit mirrors and shower panel were cohesive. Contrasted with the polished brass finish with warm rose gold undertones of the Brizo shower fixtures, tub and vanity faucets, and make up area mirror trim and hardware. LED lighting was a critical design element for form and functionality as well: the 3000k lights were installed in mini can lights above the vanities for function, LED strip lighting behind the 10’ high mirrors that carried all the way to the tile floor for accent, and oversized linear wall sconces at the makeup area ensure perfect lighting for the client’s morning routine. Mood? Check! Function? Check! Fun? Check! The bathroom result was edgy enough for this young couple yet classic enough for their Mediterranean style home.
