Modern Family Home

A modern design for a growing family. The pavers used are long narrow pavers in three colors of pale grey, dark grey and green. Grass and Hen's & Chicks weave in between the pavers that are staggered. To contain the rear garden we designed a narrow slate horizontal cedar fence with gates.
To the side of the patio, we have multiple raised metal troughs laid out in rows these are used by the home-owners and toddlers to plant herbs, tomatoes, and salad. The planting is minimal using woodland trees and shrubs, a small perennials bed of white & gray plants and a wetland garden. We designed low voltage lighting throughout the site include fence lighting for beautiful showdown casting. The final phase has started this work will include a new driveway & garage floor with epoxy decorative finish, paved entrance to main steps, some more trees, planters, and furniture.

Phase one includes a new approach to the rear garden with a retaining wall and a wide staircase. A horizontal cedar fence designed by Mariane Wheatley-Miller incloses the garden for privacy and safety for young children.

Trees in front of the wall were removed. The existing brick wall has structural problems due to the brick cap letting in water. Bricks was removed, all cracks filled, a new concrete cap added without stepping effect. The wall will be painted in the future when the house is addressed.

Remove wood steps and brick pavers, remove wall cap and build a second wall in front of the existing wall using new materials. Add step lights through out.

Our responsibility for this project was to improve circulation to all areas for family and friends. Use existing structures and repair, make sound and improve the appearance, bringing the house into a the modern style.

The existing wall was too close to the garage door and added to water collecting here. We installed a new retaining wall pushed back to the chimney, made it taller to level out the plant bed. The slope is then planted with Crispa Cutleaf Stephanandra to prevent soil erosion.

Existing retaining wall and steps were structurally unsound and not helping the homeowner and their visitors to enter the rear garden comfortably.

The rear garden had no paved area for entertaining or steps to enter. The existing lawn and planting was removed to allow for a new patio, steps and screen fencing.
