Rye Beach Shingle

An idyllic home rendered in classic shingle style, blends well into its natural surroundings, emerging from the landscape and extending cooly toward sea and sky. Four gables intersect a central hipped-roof. Matching front and rear shed dormers at the attic level culminate in a widow’s walk with Chippendale balustrade and a handsome pair of brick chimneys.

The two stately front gables each feature an oriel bay window and together frame a spacious rectangular porch decorated with Doric columns and a railing echoing the widow’s walk. Towards the rear terrace, lawn, pool, and gardens, the two opposite gables diverge at wide angles from the center - gesturing as if to openly embrace the scenic shoreline.

Rough-hewn stone walls rise prominently anchoring the house to its terrain. Distinctive stone arches drape the major openings. Stained-shingle siding prevails at the upper stories coursing along full and angular volumes with lean ornamentation. The broad expanse of this stately shingle style home is tempered by the rhythm and elegance of each window and door composition. The façade employ classical adornments conservatively to spotlight the whimsical shapes and voids that add vitality to a well-established symmetry.

While rich in detail and texture, the bright interiors are far from ostentatious. Discreet embellishments appear intermittently like the abstracted lapstrake boat at the mantelpiece of the stained cherry library, shiplap paneling in the recreation room and elsewhere, beam-and-v-groove-board ceilings in the family room, and mahogany timber beams and accents at the third floor office. In the entry foyer, a formal staircase with spindly balusters cascades from the herringbone wood floor and painted full-height paneling punctuated by the pilasters, casings, and keys of elliptical arched openings.
