Waterfront French Normandy

Built on a commanding site on Long Island Sound in Greenwich, CT, this 12,200 s.f. Waterfront French Normandy Manor House takes its design inspiration from the original house on the site, the remains of which now forms the east (left) wing of the estate. Entering through the gravel motor court, the formality of the main block of the house asserts itself with its stone walls and steeply pitched slate roof and decorative finial accents. Composed of five bays, the center projecting bay features the limestone entry portico with Ionic columns supporting a limestone roof. Side wings are treated less formally with an ordered use of stone arches, stucco and half-timbering, along with shed and hipped dormers.

The water side of the house retains this less formal character. Animated by a variety of architectural features, it evokes the rambling effect of a grand estate developed over time. From our earliest visit to the site it was clear that the water views would significantly affect the plan. Developed in a linear manner to capture the best water views and sunlight, the plan consists of a single row of primary rooms strung along a beautiful corridor. While providing inviting spaces, this arrangement created a great amount of exterior exposure with large glazed areas that would become a huge energy draw.
