Darien Colonial
This stately five-bedroom Colonial house is fashioned in the Adam style – an 18th century movement aimed at simplifying elaborate Renaissance architecture into its essential elements and emphasizing light but elegant detailing. Conceptually, the design incorporates tall ceilings and ample natural light in both a folk style story-and-a-half volume and a larger two-story center-hall volume accented by careful Classical ornamentation. The folk house contains the mudroom, kitchen, family room and other informal spaces. It’s meant to mimic what might have been a modest first home built on the property. The Adam style façade with five-part symmetry, window crowns and friezes, operable shutters, and a Corinthian cornice gives an indication of the formal spaces it encloses: Living Room, Dining Room, and Study. This “Main House” is emblematic of later expansions to early American farm houses in fashionable architectural styles of the day. At the bend between these two building types a three-car garage simulates the role of a carriage house.
Doric mutules and triglyphs add texture to the curved front portico with round columns, copper roof and balustrade. The six-panel door is appointed with an elliptical leaded-glass transom and matching sidelights. Inside the Entry Hall is accentuated by a three-story formal staircase. Formal rooms feature paneled wainscoting or full height recessed paneling. The Living Room fireplace is surrounded by honed absolute black granite and custom Federal-Style wood mantel. The paneled wall features cabinets, display shelves and a curved niche with shell decoration made famous in the 1934 renovation of the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Oval Office.
A Dutch door with wide sidelights at the Mud Room entrance is the focal point of the informal façade. It is covered by a long shed roof enclosing both open and screened portions of the porch. Inside, the spacious kitchen opens to views of the back yard from the bay-window-banquette adjacent to the Family Room. A large island offers additional seating and ample countertop work space. Custom cabinets and ceiling coffers provide a traditional rhythm for the room. Upstairs, bedrooms and private baths abound culminating a luxurious Master Suite.
