Traditional Great Room

Our clients are socially active empty-nesters who enjoy entertaining family, friends, and business associates, and they needed to transform their 26-year old house to a home more appropriate to their present lifestyle. Inspired by their son, a James Beard award winner, they envisioned an updated gourmet kitchen. The completed remodeling project was featured on the ASID Kitchen Tour and was published in Mpls/St.Paul magazine and featured in International New Architecture Kitchens and Baths.
We tore down walls to eliminate the central hallway to create a great room. The overall result is a large open main level space flooded with natural light and ideal for entertaining.

We used a mix of materials in contrasting neutral tones. The countertops are of Persian Brown granite and the table top is engineered quartz in black flecked with gold.

The traditional raised panel cabinets are made of maple finished in both dark stain and ivory paint, with the island turned posts painted black.

We raised the sunken family room floor to bring all floors to the same level. The counter-height kitchen table rests alongside the island.

We overlaid the existing brick fireplace surround with granite tiles and painted wood panels, incorporating a new audio-visual system including a television screen and cabinet drawers within the raised hearth to house AV equipment. The formal dining room walls remain to partly separate that room; however, it is opened up by a glass-paned door and a large pass-through dry bar complete with wine bottle corker on the living room side and suspended antique windows on the family room side.

The pass-through dry bar cabinets on the formal dining room side compliment the clients' antique tableware and dining furniture.

The traditional kitchen cabinets incorporate details such as arched valances, carved corbels, and light rails.

Handmade ceramic tiles and tumbled marble tiles are combined for a custom kitchen backsplash design. The traditional style pot filler is finished in black.
