Ashburn First Floor Remodel

For the renovated kitchen and family room, the clients wanted a rustic contemporary style, mixing vintage inspired materials with classic clean lines -- as a result, we created a “Modern-day Farmhouse” look for them. The remodeled space includes new hardwood flooring, cabinetry, appliances, granite countertops, tile backsplash, plumbing and lighting fixtures, custom built-ins, and custom ceiling details. We removed the dividing half-walls between the kitchen and family room to open up the spaces and allow for a larger island with seating in the new layout.

Glazing hung-up in the crevices of the white painted cabinetry gives the kitchen a rustic "old" feel, though everything is new. To keep the space from feel too old-fashioned, a more contemporary glass-and-stone backsplash is a fresh element.

A new built-in window seat with custom upholstered cushion was added to the eat-in area, for seating at one side of the kitchen table. On the other side are two new "retro" metal chairs. A farmhouse-inspired pendant with Edison bulbs completes the look.

The rustic style of the kitchen is continued with industrial-inspired pendants over the island. Edison bulbs and a distressed metal finish make the fixtures seem "old."

Before, two half walls on either side of this opening divided the kitchen from the adjacent family room. We opened up the space all the way, and used two columns (one of them is load-bearing) to complete the look and to support the house framing at the same time.

The family room with rich millwork accents compliments the hand-crafted feel of the adjacent kitchen. The blue-gray slate from the backsplash is picked up in the hearth material, and a fun blue-gray pop of color is used on the ceiling within the coffered detailing.

The style of the family room is a mix between vintage and contemporary. Smooth, sleek, refined textures (such as the clean upholstery on the furniture, and the pristine white mantel) contrast distressed and imperfect materials, such as the hand-scraped floor.

The fireplace received an update with a new stacked stone hearth, a millwork surround and mantel, and painted trim that extends to the ceiling, which frames in the TV. Tubing runs through the wall for the wires that connect the TV to its components in the built-in bench (bottom right).
