Herndon First Floor Remodel

Our clients lived in a large home with a great layout; however, they were struggling with dated furniture and decor, as well as a kitchen that lacked storage and room for two people to work. Colors were blah as were the furnishings, so we pulled together a fresh casual scheme for them, and opened up many new avenues of functionality.

Since the couple often both work in the kitchen at the same time, the space was separated into two zones: a prep area with the main sink and lots of countertop, and another area with the bar sink, warming drawer and microwave.

The floor tile is arranged on a 90-degree herringbone, to mimic the arrangement of the multicolored slate mosaic backsplash. Crackled glass pendants pick up some of the sparkle inherent in the rough natural stone tile.

Our clients' oak kitchen cabinetry (as well as flooring and tile countertop) was dated. We replaced all the cabinetry with white cabinetry in a shaker door style by Omega Cabinetry. A new second island where the breakfast table once was allows for seating and more storage.

By creating another island to take the place of a breakfast table, we were able to greatly increase the amount of storage. The range top moves to the large island and the small island contains a bar sink and a warming drawer.

A door to the garage once located at the end of this cabinetry run was moved around the corner to make room for a large refrigerator and more cabinetry storage in the Kitchen.

The extended space between the wall ovens and fridge houses a convenient drop or prep zone, complete with illuminated glass cabinetry for displaying glassware. Next to the ovens is a microwave drawer that pulls out, and food is set inside from the top.

This door to the garage was moved to the current location in the 'hall' to allow more room for cabinetry in the kitchen. The door is conveniently located out of the way of the main kitchen.

The adjacent dining room was updated with all new furniture in a clean transitional style, a rug, a unique oblong chandelier, and newly stained hardwood floors.

The entry floor was originally tiled and was replaced with lovely hardwood to match the rest of the home. The stairs were refinished and a carpet runner added. A large-scale entry chandelier provides a nice focal point.

The home office off the entry was refreshed with new paint and floor stain. Dated furniture is replaced with light airy contemporary pieces that don't give off a vibe that is too "office-y." The stained double doors to the next room and window shutters were painted white for a fresh look.

The laundry was reworked with a new washer and dryer on a field-built platform, and wall & base cabinetry for storage. Lots of hanging and shelves are provided.

The small powder room received a makeover with a new vanity, toilet, plumbing & lighting fixtures, and mirror. The mirror surround was created in the field (around a plain sheet of mirror) using glass matchstick mosaic tile and metal edge strips.

The 'breakfast table' countertop was made 20" deep for lots of legroom, and enough length for 5 dining chairs. The existing bay window provides added maneuvering space. Both islands are full of storage.

To replace a dated media center, we added built-in cabinetry to the great room to house the TV and knick-knacks. The built-ins were created by a custom woodworker in Mennonite Pennsylvania. A new modern ceiling fan completes the space.

The great room was updated with a 'greige' color on the walls, newly stained hardwood floors, and fresh new furniture. The clients embraced a palette or greys and light neutrals, with shades of blue for color.

The large living room deserved a large-screen TV as well as -large scale furniture. The built-in cabinets were custom designed for the TV size, and the sectional provides lots of comfy seating. The existing fireplace and new feature ceiling fan bring interest to the large area.

The scale of the furniture and decor is appropriate for the large space: an extensive sectional, a large rug, and the built-in media center anchor the room.
