Wendell Holmes Transitional Main Level in Herndon

This single family home in Herndon is in a great location and has plenty of room, but the main level configuration just wasn’t working for our clients. We partnered with them to not only improve the curb appeal by moving the front door location and creating a beautiful new porch, but also change the flow of the entire first floor. We also created a new Mud/Laundry room, a Sunroom at the back of the home and the final touch - a gorgeous new deck.

The main level of the home now makes much more “sense” and the spaces flow seamlessly from one to the other. Now the couple can relax and enjoy the home all year around along with their beloved dachshunds.

After - by relocating the front door (seen behind the stair railing) and replacing it with a window, the previous Living Room is now a more-functional, separate formal Dining Room. No more feeling like you are sitting in the entryway!

Before - view from the Front Door. The staircase was immediately on the left hand side of the front door with an ill-placed Dining Room beyond. The Dining Room wall separated it from the Family Room and closed it off from the rest of the home. The spaces just didn’t flow well into one another.

After - the new stair railing system makes a statement, and the configuration of the spaces is now more practical. The space beyond the staircase is now the entryway/hall, and a doorway into the Family Room beyond was created to provide an entrance from the Hallway.

After - the new staircase completely opens up the space to the mezzanine and upper level. The stair tread was stained to coordinate with the hardwood flooring color used throughout the first floor.

After - the view from the relocated Front Door creates a “WOW” factor when you enter the home! It feels much bigger, and rather than a Dining Room, the entry space is now a proper Foyer with a centered entrance to the Kitchen.

After - the space is totally transformed! A Sunroom provides tons of natural light in the space, as well as being a cozy spot to sit. The entrance to the Kitchen was completely opened up and the transition from one room to the next is seamless.

After - the wall of the Family Room was opened up to the new front entrance. The spaces now flow together and the entire room is opened up and feels much lighter and brighter. Previously, this room felt shut off from the rest of the home and was under utilized.
