During the initial consultation, we learned that this moderately large home was built in the mid 1970's. The clients were torn between moving or remodeling because of several compliant areas on the lower level that were not aesthetically pleasing and functional - complaining mainly about the kitchen and eating areas. The clients enjoy cooking and entertaining, so the main objective was to create a casual flow that would make any guest feel welcome in and around the kitchen area. The kitchen used to be dark and the style was dated. The minimal cabinet space provided inadequate storage and the floor was old and worn. They desired a kitchen in which they would savor spending time.

To best achieve the needs of the client, we removed the west wall to open and enlarge the space and allow for a more welcoming casual flow. In addition to the removal of the wall, a stylish cabinet door style was selected. A light pecan stain highlighted with a rich glaze was chosen to add depth and sophistication to the cabinets in this room. The countertops present a high luster engineered stone. This beautiful stone was preferred, not only for its quality and durability, but also to reflect the natural and artificial light creating the illusion of a much larger room. This added that subtle "wow" factor that the clients were looking to achieve. A custom tile backsplash was designed to harmonize the total look of the kitchen. Strategically placed antique metal accent tiles provided the "pop" and modernization this kitchen screamed for.

The function of the overall kitchen layout and lack of functional cabinet space was of great concern to the clients. To overcome this concern, additional cabinetry and counter space was installed casing the eastern wall. The hallway in this area was widened 12" to allow for easier access to the redesigned powder room and the 1970's style sliding door pantry that was transformed into a useful and attractive custom wall unit. Solid wood floors were installed throughout to provide the casual warmth and flow that the clients desired. The final touch in this kitchen was the installation of coordinating oil rubbed bronze hardware / faucet and lighting.
