Lake Newport Contemporary Basement Remodel in Reston

The basement of this Reston home is spacious with tons of room for the family of five, but the ‘French country’ inspired finishes were more traditional than our contemporary-leaning clients liked. It was time to bring it right up to date in keeping with the rest of their home. The design brief? A modern, family-friendly space with lots of zones for entertaining, relaxing, movie watching, working out and an all important upgrade to the Guest Bedroom and Bathroom. The final touch: heated floors to keep things cozy in the winter months!

In addition to the complete remodel of the Rec Room, barely a room in the basement was left untouched. We completely remodeled the Media Room, turning it into a high-tech theatre room with a large screen T.V. and room-darkening colors and fixtures for better movie and sports watching! The Home Gym also underwent a change with more modern colors and matching interior doors for a consistent look in the basement. The Guest Suite was also updated. The Guest Bathroom is now a cool, contemporary space (ready for college-aged kids to come home to!), with a heated towel rail, washlet and modern fixtures.

After. By removing the pre-existing load-bearing pillar at the entrance to the Rec Room and replacing it with a load-bearing beam, the entire space is opened right up and it now feels bright and welcoming!

Before. The Basement Bar was in good shape, but the heavily detailed wood made the whole space feel smaller and darker than this south-facing room really is.

After. The remodeled Basement Bar is a contemporary masterpiece! Although the base cabinets are dark (painted in a low sheen black), eliminating upper cabinets and using white and grey geometric tile on the backsplash keeps the look modern and bright.

After. We added sconces for additional light. The "Marvel" series backsplash tile in "Carrara Pure" marble by Atlas Concorde (from Mosaic Tile Company) keeps this corner of the basement, which has no natural light other than the doors opposite, feeling bright and welcoming

After. The rift-cut white oak floating shelves from Custom Floating Shelves allowed us to eliminate the upper cabinets for a more contemporary look. Caesarstone quartz countertops in “Rugged Concrete” from EuroStoneCraft add a contemporary, but hard wearing, edge.

Before. The large, wooden billiards table was little used and boxed into the room by a load-bearing column and pillar.

After. We removed the load-bearing column and replaced it with a load-bearing beam for a cleaner look which instantly opened up the space. The heavy wood billiards table was replaced with a contemporary table tennis table, providing both a statement piece in itself as well as fun for the family....

Before. A key part of this remodel was removing much of the decorative detail such as crown moulding which gave the space a more traditional feel.

After. The old carpet and crown moulding is gone! We installed heated flooring beneath the new luxury vinyl plank (LVP) in the color “Balcony Sunrise” by Twelve Oaks from ProSource. The same LVP flooring was used throughout the basement for a consistent look and feel.

After. The new “Sideline Elite” electric fireplace by Touchstone Products takes center stage and provides a focal point for the room. To the left of the fireplace, double glass doors lead to the Media Room.

After. Wow! The new 3-panel glass and black double doors by The Sliding Door Company make a statement at the entrance to the Media Room! “Milo” sconces in “Vintage Brass & Black” by Kalko from Dominion Lighting are contemporary but provide a nod to vintage movie theaters!

Before. This small storage cabinet at the basement entrance provided some design detail, but was underutilized. The mullion door (seen on the left) leading from the first floor to the basement dated the space.

After. No design detail was missed! We upgraded the entrance to the basement with a 3-panel glass black door by The Sliding Door Company (a matching double door was installed at the entrance to the Media Room). The door keeps noise and heat in the basement, but also adds a stylish design detail....

After. The walls were painted in the color “Dark Night” (using Benjamin Moore “Aura” paint color-matched to Sherwin-Williams SW6237). The same LVP flooring was continued into the Home Gym for a cohesive look.

After. Although the vanity, heated towel rail and fixtures are dark, the overall look is kept light and bright with the use of “Cove” floor tiles in the color “Storm” by Atlas Concorde (from Mosaic Tile Company) and the “Agreeable Gray” paint color on the walls.
