This is our latest addition and remodel to this 1925 era residence in the Crocker Highlands neighborhood on the Oakland Piedmont border. The goal was to consolidate three of the rear rooms into one great room which contains a kitchen and family room. An addition to the rear yard provided some extra needed space. A new full bath was added adjacent to the family room at the ground level. This was part of a future thinking and aging in place strategy. The idea was that having a full bath at the lower level made it easier to stay in the house longer as one ages and has future difficulties navigating to the second floor level. The lower family room was designed to be converted into a future bedroom if this was needed. The master bedroom above was expanded and a deck was added over the roof of the great room. The new great room was designed to open up to the rear garden extending the sense of space and brings in a lots of natural light. The view to the garden is enhanced at night with dramatic exterior lighting.
