Energy Efficient Green Renovation in Great Falls

During the initial design consultation for their fourth BOWA remodeling project on their home in Great Falls, Virginia, the homeowners expressed the desire to incorporate environmentally conscious materials and practices. The scope of the project included renovating an existing main-level bathroom, as well as updating the family room to accommodate their growing collection of glass art.

Throughout the interior renovation, special care was given to reusing or refinishing existing materials where possible, and selecting recycled or sustainable materials as needed. All wood products, from the flooring to the cabinets, trim and framing was FSC certified from sustainable growth forests. Low VOC, NAUF (no added urea formaldehyde) cabinetry combined with custom lighting creates dramatic display space for artwork in the family room, as well as a warm and cozy book nook adjacent to the office.

The bathroom renovation provided the opportunity to reconfigure a large, awkward space to create both a powder room and a separate, well-appointed guest bath. Both bathrooms also feature NAUF cabinetry, recycled tile and spectacular fixtures, artfully presented to suit the homeowners’ aesthetic.

A second phase of construction – focused specifically on energy efficiency – began with a comprehensive energy audit and evaluation of the homeowners’ records of his energy consumption. As an experienced green remodeler, the design build contractor identified several key areas for improvement. The first step was adding insulation and air sealing at multiple cantilevered floor overhangs and at the skylight shaft. The second step involved replacing the HVAC equipment with a high efficiency air handler and compressor and sealing the related duct work. Several aging windows were also replaced with “super-insulated” windows. All told these energy upgrades have netted significant savings after just one heating season!

The end result surpassed the homeowners’ wish for beautiful, comfortable and energy efficient spaces and they couldn’t be happier with the renovation.
