The owners of this home in Great Falls, Virginia wanted to renovate and expand their master suite and bring their contemporary style to the last remaining original space of the home.

The challenge for the design build team was to construct an elevated addition that harmonized with the existing home and maintained the integrity of the existing landscape plan. The solution was to set the addition on architectural piers – ganged columns on stone bases. The architectural columns bring a sense of scale to the height of the columns, and the stone complements the existing hardscape. The piers allowed the existing landscape and stone stairs that are critical to the exterior environment of the home to be preserved. New cedar siding and roofing ensured the addition blended seamlessly into the existing residence.

With its enlarged footprint, the new master suite accommodates a sitting room, enlarged master bath, a sleeping chamber and a large walk-in closet, which were all designed to showcase the property’s tree-top views. The master bathroom highlights the owner’s contemporary flair and features a marble and glass tile blend complemented by beautiful Mississippi river rock. Thanks to careful planning, ‘book-matched’ cararra marble slabs accent and unify the walk-in shower and bubble jet tub. The closet features custom built-ins also accented by a cararra marble top and an expansive built-in mirror. The high interior windows above the bed, an unexpected detail, transfer daylight into the closet and allow the closet lights to become part of the bedroom design.

Unable to find a bed that suited their taste and the space, the homeowners turned to the design build team to fashion a custom bed and headboard. During construction, the contractor created several sets of mock-ups to help the homeowners visualize how their furniture selections would fit in the space, as well as to determine the desired size and shape of lighting fixtures.
